WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
SCLEROTHERAPY
The special medicine that was injected causes the walls of the
little veins to become irritated and collapse without harmful
effect elsewhere in the body. However, you may note any of the
following during the healing period:
Irritation: At first, there is some redness, irritation
and swelling in the areas injected. This may last for a day or
two.
Delayed Response: Veins irritated sufficiently to collapse
may not do so for 1 to 3 days after treatment. Dont be overly
concerned if you see no effect during the first several days.
Tenderness: Some people note a small zone of tenderness
associated with a bruise or a dark blue-black vein that may be
quite firm and tender to the touch. These changes might indicate
a localized blood clot. If tenderness persists, please call us.
Pigmentation: Over a period of 2 weeks to several months,
some patients notice a few brown discolored spots where veins
have been injected. These pigmented areas will fade slowly and
we have special creams to help things along.
Small Sore: On rare occasions, a few people note a small
zone of irritation and scab formation. This is a little sore that
heals by itself over 1 to 3 weeks.
Blush Veins: Sometimes there are mats of very fine new
veins that form where originally other individual larger veins
were. The formation of these new veins is totally unpredictable
and quite uncommon. Some may prove resistant to removal.
Remember: Not all veins disappear in any one treatment!
Sclerotherapy treatment does not prevent new veins from forming.
POST TREATMENT CARE
You may resume your normal activities.
For tender sites, we ask that you wrap these areas with
an ace bandage for 1-3 days after treatment.
If you experience tenderness, you may take 2 buffered aspirin
every four hours while awake for 1-3 days following the treatment.
If your tenderness persists, please call the Dermatology Clinic
at 650-723-6316.
If you develop a sore at an injection site, please
notify us.
